Weitwörther Au in Spring

Our spring trip to the Auwald was very different to our winter trip. The snow had disappeared, and it was not as cold. The swallows had returned from their migration. The whole Weitwörther Au was full of spring sounds, frogs croaking and birds chirping or calling. The buds on the trees had started to open up.  Everything was green.

Our main topic this time was ‘birds’. We learnt how different the female bird looks to the male bird. The males are more colourful because they want to attract the female birds. Some male birds do special dances, others show off with their flight performances and many try to impress the females with their unique sound. The females have more dull colours than the males to camouflage from predators and to keep their nests safe.

We walked around the lake with binoculars. We observed birds and their babies, but also frogs in swamp water. We also spotted grey geese breeding.

Torben, our expert from ‘Haus der Natur’, taught us about migration, birds mating and about the great variety of birds’ feathers that exist.

We had a very interesting excursion, and it was lots of fun.
